The Great Online Shopping festival is around the corner. The dates are out: it is going to be held for three days – the 11^th, 12^th and 13^th of December.

For the uninitiated, the Great Online Shopping Festival (GOSF) was started by Google India on 12 December 2012 in collaboration with hundreds of popular online shopping portals in India. It is celebrated for one day and online shopping sites give heavy discounts to promote their sales. GOSF is a platform that benefits consumers as they can purchase products at cheap rates, online shopping sites as sales increases by leaps and bounds and merchants as they can clear inventory due to mass purchase. GOSF started on a catchy date 12-12-12 i.e. 12 December 2012, close to Christmas time.

The concept of one day online sale with huge discount has its origin in US. In the U.S. online shopping sites promote sales with huge discounts on first Monday after Black Friday that follows Thanksgiving. This is called Cyber Monday. Cyber Monday started in the year 2005. Afterwards it has spread to several countries such as Canada, Japan, Australia, Colombia, U.K., where online shopping has become a trend. In China a similar day of online shopping is observed on 11-11 i.e. November 11, named Single’s Day.
